My great great grandfther John was born in Bristol, Tennessee. From my extensive research through the years the records reveal he was born sometime about/between 1837-1842.
His parents remain unknown to us at this time. It's been passed down through the generations that his parents died when John was a young boy and he was raised by his aunt (name unknown).
Pvt. John Steele was a Civil War union soldier. He served in Company A and C, 18th Regiment, Illinois Volunteers, and was discharged 16 December 1865 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. From his Civil War Discharge and his Civil War Pension file, this we know.
After his discharge from the Civil War, John married 30 August 1869 to Emma Lamond in Murphey's Bend, Jackson County, Illinois.
In 2003 after researching his Civil War Pension file I discovered a sworn statement dated 9 February 1914 documented in the state of Oklahoma, Carter County. In this sworn statement my gg grandfather John stated he was unable to furnish exact proof of his birth as he was only about 3 years old when his mother died; and about 7 years old when his father died; that he didn't remember his mother and was raised by other people; but an aunt told John he was born in 1837. About 15 years prior to 1916 John attempted to get the facts of his birth and he was told he was born in 1842. The Pension Board decided for John he was born September 1, 1842. The census records reflect the inconsistantcies of his estimated year and state of birth.
John and Emma were blessed with 6 children:
William Franklin Steele (1870-1942)
Ida M (Steele) Wheeler Carnahan (1873-1943) Luella (Steele) Saxon Maritn (1875-1930)
George Steele (1876-1944)
Ray Wilson Steele (1883-1951)
Homer Steele
Our efforts continue to determine who John's parents were and who raised him. If you have additional information please don't hesitate to contact me. No one in our family we have been in contact with over the last several decades knows the answer to this question. Any leads and/or documentation will be appreciated to help solve the mysteries of John's early life prior to his participation in the Civil War.
